Harry Kane set a new record for Premier League goals in a calendar year as Tottenham thrashed Southampton at Wembley. Here’s how we rated each Spurs in their 5-2 victory.

Hugo Lloris: 5

Not his best game. Had an anxious moment when he palmed a Danny Rose back header onto a post and might have done a bit better with the two goals which beat him.

Serge Aurier: 6

Plenty of opportunities to get on the front foot in support of Christian Eriksen down the right flank. In common with the rest of the back four, his defensive responsibilities were modest for long spells.

Davinson Sanchez: 6

Had to break sweat when tested by a lung-bursting run from Shane Long but had the measure of the away side’s attacking raids. Given more work to do late on.

Jan Vertonghen: 6

With no suspended Charlie Austin to worry about, the Belgian had only the pace of Long to contend with for most of the match and was largely untroubled. Made one superb interception to hook a cross off the line.

Danny Rose: 7

Earned the free-kick from which Kane opened the scoring. A typically bustling presence on the left flank and a constant pain for the Saints.

Eric Dier: 6

Not a particularly challenging afternoon for the England man, in spite of the Saints throwing the kitchen sink in the final 20 minutes to test his shielding capabilities.

Mousa Dembele: 7

Seemed to operate in a pocket of space of his own. Dominated Oriol Romeu in the middle and always looked to get Spurs on the front foot. Unlucky to depart injured on 54 minutes.

Hueng-Min Son: 7

Excellent contribution. An assist for Kane’s second goal and almost managed to convert a superb sweeping cross from Kane before the break. Made no mistake when Alli laid goal on for him on a plate. Erik Lamela replaced him for the final 15 minutes.

Dele Alli: 8

The swagger is back. Involved in Kane’s second goal and then rolled in a goal at the start of the second half after side-stepping ex-Chelsea man Romeu, before laying on the fourth for Son. Delicious pass helped Kane to his hat-trick.

Christian Eriksen: 6

His free-kick to Kane got the ball rolling but this was one afternoon when he was not the main string-puller, for once.

Harry Kane: 9

Another day, another record-breaking hat-trick. Close-range header gave him the Premier League goalscoring record for a calendar year with 37. His tap-in from a low Son cross made him king of Europe with 55, eclipsing Messi. Composed finished gave him his 8th treble of the year. Typically lethal.

Moussa Sissoko: 6

Came on at 4-0 when the job was already done. A decent, if unspectacular cameo.
