Tottenham stunned by late Burnley goal at Wembley

Chris Wood’s injury-time equaliser extended Tottenham’s miserable record at Wembley.

Spurs have now won only twice in their last 12 games at the national stadium – although it seemed certain that Dele Alli’s second-half strike would be enough to improve that record.

However, Wood snatched a late point for the Clarets when he raced onto Robbie Brady’s through ball and smashed his finish beyond the helpless Hugo Lloris.

Burnley had the better of the opening exchanges as they racked up the corner count and Brady’s curling ball, which threatened to creep in at the far post, forced a save from Lloris.

Although Spurs soon settled into a pattern of possession, they were unable to find a route past the sturdy Clarets rearguard, ably marshalled by former Brentford man James Tarkowski.

Tarkowski then closed down both Alli and Harry Kane sufficiently to divert their shots at goal from the target, while Kane and Eric Dier sent headers sailing over the bar.

In fact, Tom Heaton’s only save of the first half was a near-post block from Heung-Min Son, who was adjudged offside anyway – incorrectly, as it turned out.

But Tottenham finally breached the visitors’ defence four minutes after the restart when Ben Mee mangled his attempt to clear Dier’s flick-on and Alli slotted away the stray ball at the second attempt.

That goal transformed the dynamic of the contest, with Burnley switching to two orthodox strikers – but, apart from a Brady drive that Lloris beat away at the near post, the change had little impact.

It was Spurs who seemed the more likely to score again and Kane had several opportunities to break his duck for the season, thwarted on two occasions by close-range saves from Heaton.

The Clarets goalkeeper also denied Alli and Christian Eriksen to ensure that the contest went right to the final whistle – and Wood stunned Tottenham by grabbing the equaliser with seconds remaining.
