Sterling should commit his future to Liverpool, says mentor
Raheem Sterling’s former coach says he has no doubt the teenager will commit his future to Liverpool.
There has been speculation about Sterling’s future as his representatives have been discussing a new deal for him at Anfield, with Chelsea and Arsenal said to be showing an interest.
But Steve Gallen, who took Sterling to QPR and battled in vain to keep him there before the player’s move to Merseyside in 2010, does not believe he would be tempted back to London.
“I’m sure he’ll stay there and I hope so – he should do,” said Gallen.
“I read about him supposedly wanting all this money but I know Raheem just wants to play football and he’s at a great club.
“If Raheem wasn’t a pro footballer he’d be back at St Raphael’s estate in Neasden kicking a ball around – he just loves to play.
“You read all this stuff about him but I know what a great kid he is. He’s an absolute diamond and we always knew he’d go on and be a star.
“We knew it from when I first brought him to QPR at the age of 14. Paulo Sousa was the manager and invited him to train with the first team.
“At the end of the session the players stood there and applauded the lad. They could see even then what a player he was going to be.”
