Sterling joins Arsenal as Chelsea sign Sancho
Raheem Sterling has joined Arsenal on a season-long loan from Chelsea, who have signed another England winger, Jadon Sancho, from Manchester United.
Sterling, out of favour at Chelsea, was handed a chance to stay in London and join the Gunners, having previously worked with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta at Manchester City.
And in a somewhat surprising move on transfer deadline day given the Blues’ other forward options and the fact that Sterling was deemed surplus to requirements, Sancho was brought to Stamford Bridge.
Sancho, 24, has arrived on a season-long loan but it is effectively a permanent move as the deal includes an obligation for Chelsea to buy him next summer. There is no such clause in the Sterling deal.
Meanwhile, striker Amando Broja also left Chelsea, joining Everton on a season-long loan – another deal which includes an obligation to make the move permanent.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling. It’s really exciting. I’m buzzing,” the Harlesden-raised Sterling said after completing his move.
“Looking at everything, I’m just, like, ‘This is a perfect fit for me’, and I’m super happy that we got it over the line.”
Chelsea had hoped to sign a striker but were unable to agree a deal to bring in Victor Osimhen from Napoli.
