QPR v Aston Villa: five key battles

QPR will hope to end a four-match losing streak when they entertain Aston Villa in Sunday lunchtime’s game. Here are five potential match-ups we think could influence the outcome.

Tjaronn Chery v Mile Jedinak

Once again, Dutch midfielder Chery is leading from the front in terms of goals (four) and assists (three). He was not at his best against Derby, leading Ian Holloway to launch an impassioned defence of his “star player”. They could do with a good showing from Chery against Villa, who will have former Crystal Palace man Jedinak as their main enforcer.

Conor Washington or Sebastian Polter v James Chester

Washington has been moved into a more natural central position under Holloway and scored the first goal of the manager’s second spell in charge. However, his overall return since joining Rangers in January reads three in 36. Polter, if he is fully fit, may return to head up the attack. Whoever plays faces a tough battle against Wales international Chester, who has impressed since joining Villa from Hull.

Grant Hall v Jack Grealish

QPR defender Grant Hall
Hall’s move into midfield follows a trend of Holloway deploying players in new positions. If the former Tottenham youngster is used there again, he’ll come up against Grealish, whose unpredictability causes headaches for the opposition but also occasionally for his own manager.

James Perch v Jonathan Kodjia

Restored to the starting line-up against Derby after suspension, Perch was arguably at fault for the Rams’ goal. Kodjia has seven goals in 16 games since joining Villa from Bristol City in August but more often than not has been used wide on the left – Perch may have his hands full.

Jake Bidwell v Albert Adomah

Such are Villa’s attacking options, it is difficult to second-guess their team – even ex-Fulham marksman Ross McCormack may only be a substitute. Former Harrow Borough winger Adomah could be restored to the starting line-up, which will certainly give Bidwell plenty to think about.
