Lampard’s midfield options bode well for Chelsea
While Chelsea have been restricted by a transfer ban, new boss Frank Lampard is certainly not short of options in midfield.
The best matched betting sites rate Manchester City and Liverpool as the Premier League favourites again, but Chelsea could be worthy dark horses. And in the centre of the pitch they will definitely be strong, with Lampard able to make a number of excellent choices.
King Kante
N’Golo Kante’s knee problem is a concern and the France international has not featured at all during pre-season. But Lampard is hopeful he will be available for the start of the new season.
Lampard’s predecessor Maurizio Sarri controversially deployed Kante – one of the world’s best defensive midfielders – in an attacking role. Lampard will surely draw a line under that.
Jorginho stays a Blue
Despite speculation that he could follow Sarri out of Stamford Bridge, Jorginho remains. It will be interesting to see how he fares under the new manager.
The Mounting case for Mason
Back from his loan spell at Derby, where he played under Lampard, Mason Mount has been impressive in pre-season and could well get a chance to show what he can do. Already on the national team’s radar, it could be a big season for the youngster.
Barkley looking the part
Barkley is another player who has looked sharp in pre-season and this could be a big campaign for the England international, who needs to start fulfilling his huge potential.
Loftus-Cheek on the mend
Plus, there’s the impending return of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles. With Lampard determined to give young players a chance, this is a great chance for the fans’ favourite to cement his place in the side.
Duo set to depart
Given the options Lampard has at his disposal, it seems unlikely that Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater will get a look-in. Bakayoko has failed to impress for Chelsea and will surely go back out on loan, having ended last season with AC Milan. And there appears to be no way back for Drinkwater, who didn’t feature at all under Sarri.
