Injured midfielder set to miss Chelsea’s trip to Japan
Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu is set to miss the World Club Cup after suffering an injury against Sunderland.
Romeu limped off during the 3-1 victory at the Stadium of Light and was immediately taken to London to be assessed.
With the Chelsea squad due to fly straight to Japan, the player looks highly unlikely to feature in the tournament.
“He has gone to London and we are waiting to hear from the doctor,” said interim manager Rafael Benitez.
“When the player leaves the pitch limping and we are flying to Japan straightaway, it makes things difficult. As it stands, he won’t be flying with us.”
Benitez, who will also be without skipper John Terry, insists the club are taking the trip to Asia very seriously.
“It’s important to have an opportunity to win any trophy,” he said.
