How London clubs have performed in 2019/2020 EPL season
London hosts some of the English Premier League heavyweights, including the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, and Spurs. Every other time the season kicks off, bookmarkers often have top London clubs on good odds of winning the premier league title. This season has been tough and competitive, as highlighted by the narrow gap between teams fighting for the top four and those walking on relegation thread. Well, let us look at how the London-based clubs have fared in the 2019/2020 season.
How did bookmarkers predict the 2019/2020 season?
For starters, let us look at what bookmarkers predicted at the start of the season. Well, the bookies tipped Manchester City to pip Liverpool to the title. Tottenham was expected to come in third with Chelsea winding up the top four. Manchester United was predicted to take fifth place while Arsenal was expected to struggle outside the Champions League places. In the relegation battle, Sheffield United were favorites to drop to the Championship side while Norwich and Burnley were to follow Sheffield to the EFL. Most bookmarkers got some of its predictions right. Manchester City didn’t take the crown, though. They lost to Liverpool who won their first title since 1990. The other big surprise has been Sheffield United currently fighting for European football.
London clubs have also had a mixed season with the likes of Tottenham struggling. Let us look at how the London clubs in the EPL have performed.
Chelsea FC
Chelsea FC is no doubt the king of UK-based soccer clubs this season. The Frank Lampard led squad has been full of exciting young talents who have done pretty well in their debut season. Chelsea has undoubtedly played some fascinating football, and it is easy to see why they currently sit fourth, chasing third-placed Leicester with a few games remaining.
Chelsea’s only hope for silverware is the FA Cup as they are in the quarter-finals stage. Although they are still in the UEFA Champions League competition, a 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge means they are likely to bow out.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur delivered a magnificent campaign last season. They went all the way to the finals of the UEFA Champions League only to lose to Liverpool. This season they have largely looked a shadow of themselves. This is evident by the unexpected managerial shakeup where the head coach Mauricio Pochettino was replaced by Jose Mourinho after a string of abysmal performance. Currently, Tottenham sits 7th, and they are unlikely to catch fourth-placed Chelsea. With Manchester City likely to be banned from the Champions League next season, Tottenham still has an outside chance if they finish fifth. This year, they were outmuscled in the knockout stages of the Champions League by RB Leipzig, and they also crashed out of the FA Cup as well. A Champion’s League spot will be a massive success this season for spurs.
Arsenal FC
Arsenal FC started brightly, and then everything collapsed for the then manager Unai Emery. Eventually, he was sacked and replaced by the former Gunner’s midfielder Mikel Arteta. Tasked to steady the ship, Mikel Arteta has posted mixed results as well.
There has been a glimpse of good football under the new tactician, but they are still nowhere near what’s expected in the league. They were also dumped out of UEFA Europa League by Olympiacos. The only hope for silverware is the FA Cup. The FA cup will be a tough encounter bearing in mind the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Leicester are still in the competition. They currently sit 9th on the table, and it will be another season to forget for the Gunners.
Crystal Palace
Going by their previous performances, it is hard not to appreciate what Crystal Palace have done this season. They currently sit 10th, just a point behind Arsenal, and still look good to go for the remainder of the season. With a few games remaining, Crystal Palace can even surpass the 50 points mark. This one will go down as a good season for Roy Hodgson’s team.
West Ham United
West Ham seems the odd one out of the London-based premier league clubs. It is the only London team fighting the relegation nightmare. After 31 outings, West Ham United has garnered only 27 points. They have won on seven occasions, drew seven times, and lost eighteen times!
They are currently 17th on the table and ahead of Aston Villa and Bournemouth just on goal difference. It was a team that many had expected would be on the opposite side of the table, but the investments haven’t paid off. Things are looking bleak for David Moyes’ side as the season draws to a close.
