Half-time: Shakhtar 1 Chelsea 0
Chelsea trailed to a dominant Shakhtar Donetsk side after being outplayed for long periods of an open and entertaining first half.
The European champions went a goal down after only three minutes, when Alex Teixeira took advantage of a fortunate ricochet off John Terry and fired low past Petr Cech.
Terry returned to the side along with Frank Lampard, but the latter went off injured after 18 minutes.
And Terry also had a miserable opening period as part of an overworked defence as the hosts dominated.
Shakhtar went close on numerous occasions and Cech was forced into several fine saves towards the end of the half.
But the home side’s willingness to pour forward left big gaps at the back and will give Chelsea hope they can turn things around with a more composed display in the final third of the pitch.
Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Terry, Luiz, Cole, Oscar, Ramires, Mikel, Lampard (Hazard 18), Mata, Torres.
Subs: Turnbull, Romeu, Sturridge, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Bertrand.
