Sergio Aguero’s goal put Manchester City ahead at Stamford Bridge after Pedro had almost scored for Chelsea.

City took control after a lively start by Guus Hiddink’s side, who would have gone behind sooner but for excellent saves by Thibaut Courtois.

Diego Costa, back from suspension, caused panic in the City penalty area and laid the ball back for Pedro, whose shot was cleared off the line by Nicolás Otamendi.

Costa then found the net but was offside, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek had a shot saved by City keeper Joe Hart as Chelsea dominated the early stages.

City then began to impose themselves and Blues keeper Courtois saved with his legs to deny his fellow Belgian Kevin De Bruyne after the former Chelsea man had been put through by Yaya Toure’s pass.

Courtois also saved with his legs after Samir Nasri similarly found himself through on goal, and he produced another good stop to keep out Aguero’s shot following good work by De Bruyne.

But when De Bruyne found Aguero again on 32 minutes, the Argentine’s right-footed shot from near the edge of the penalty area was helped into the bottom corner of the net by a deflection off Gary Cahill.
