Groves weighs in ahead of San Jose clash

George Groves has weighed in ahead of his showdown with Mexico’s Francisco Sierra in San Jose, California.

Groves was a pound-and-a-half over the usual 12-stone super-middleweight limit, while his opponent came in at at 12st 2lbs.

The 10-round fight will take place at the agreed catchweight as it is a non-title bout, with the Hammersmith man pencilled in for a defence of his British and Commonwealth titles at Wembley Arena in September.

First, Groves must deal with the heavy-handed Sierra, who has won 25 of his 31 professional contests – 22 of them by knockout.

“I can’t wait to get in there and show what I can do,” Groves, 24, told West London Sport.

“Training’s gone really well, I’m in a really good place and fighting in America is a good opportunity for me to showcase my ability.”

It will be Groves’ second fight in the United States and is on the undercard of a welterweight world title bout between Robert Guerrero and Selcuk Aydin.

He expects Sierra, also 24, to give him a serious test but is confident he will preserve his unbeaten record.

“Sierra’s record shows you that not only can he punch, he also doesn’t like to hang around,” he said.

“When he comes looking to land big shots I’ll show my skills and break him down. He’s not the kind of guy you can just walk through.

“I think you’re going to see the best of me on Saturday night. You’ll see more variety to my boxing. I’ve been working on a lot of different things.”

West London Sport will have live updates from San Jose. Groves is expected in the ring around 1am UK time.
