Groves weighs in ahead of Wembley clash

George Groves weighed in at 12st 3lbs for Saturday’s clash with Dario German Balmaceda of Argentina at Wembley Arena.

Balmaceda was also three pounds over the usual 12st super-middleweight limit – as agreed because there is no title at stake.

Hammersmith’s unbeaten Commonwealth champion will be fighting under the Matchroom Sport umbrella for the first time.

He was due to face Mohamed Ali Ndiaye for the vacant European crown at the same venue the following weekend.

That bout was scrapped after Groves opted to split from promoter Frank Warren and join Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom.

The 24-year-old is also scheduled to appear as chief support to the world title fight between Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler at the O2 Arena on 25 May.

Nottingham’s IBF champion Froch, who is also promoted by Matchroom, has been touted as a possible future opponent for Groves.
