Groves moves closer to title ‘blockbuster’
George Groves could face world champion Carl Froch later this year, Eddie Hearn has confirmed.
Hearn, who promotes both super-middleweights, originally suggested the pair were likely to meet next summer.
But amid reports the IBF have ordered Nottingham’s Froch, 36, to defend his title against mandatory challenger Groves, talks are taking place ahead of a planned announcement next week.
“We are in talks regarding a potential blockbuster domestic fight later this year,” said Hearn.
“Both fighters have plenty of options and although it’s a fight we originally envisaged for next summer, if it makes sense for both fighters neither has a problem with making it happen.”
Hammersmith’s unbeaten prospect Groves, 25, holds the Commonwealth title and has also been British champion.
He is keen to challenge for a world title this year, with WBO champion Robert Stieglitz and newly-crowned WBC champion Sakio Bika also touted as possible opponents.
