Groves eyes world title fight in London

George Groves is hoping for another chance to fight for a world title in London.

The Hammersmith super-middleweight, who will face American Denis Douglin at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Saturday, is the mandatory challenger for the WBC belt currently held by Anthony Dirrell.

It means Groves, 26, is in line for a third attempt to become a world champion, having suffered a controversial defeat against Carl Froch in their first meeting and a knockout in their rematch at Wembley in May.

“I would love to fight in the UK and be able to deliver for the UK fans,” said Groves.

“Winning a world title at home in London would be awesome, but I’m happy to go on the road.

“I think there’s more money involved for Dirrell if he comes over here, but I’ve been successful on the road, so it can be done.”

This weekend’s fight will be Groves’ third since he signed with Sauerland Promotions.

He bounced back from his second loss to Froch by beating Frenchman Christophe Rebrasse in September in a final eliminator for the WBC title – a win which also saw Groves pick up the European title.

“I just want to keep fighting for now, regardless of where it is,” Groves added.

“One of the reasons I wanted to work with Team Sauerland is that they have the essential connections all around the world to boost my profile.”
