Branislav Ivanovic’s goal on the stroke of half-time put Premier League leaders Chelsea ahead at The Hawthorns, where a victory would put them four points clear of second-placed Arsenal.
The Serbian defender smashed home after Willian’s corner had been flicked on by David Luiz.
Earlier, Willian turned cleverly and fired just wide of the target.
At the other end, Chris Brunt shot wide after being teed up by Thievy Bifouma.
Chelsea made a strong start to the second half, with Oscar sending an effort wide before keeper Ben Foster saved from Samuel Eto’o and Willian.
Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Azpilicueta; Ramires, Matic; Willian, Oscar, Hazard; Eto’o.
Subs: Schwarzer, Cole, Mikel, Lampard, Schurrle, Salah, Torres.
