Half-time: Chelsea 1 Watford 1

Chelsea: Diego Costa

Troy Deeney equalised with a penalty four minutes before half-time after Diego Costa gave Chelsea the lead against the run of play in Guus Hiddink’s first match in charge since the Dutchman’s return to Stamford Bridge.

Hiddink’s side went ahead on 32 minutes. Willian swung in a corner from the right and after John Terry’s header near the penalty spot, Costa turned and volleyed home with his left boot from just inside the six-yard box.

But Nemanja Matic gifted Watford a chance to level when he inexplicably handled Ben Watson’s corner, and Deeney made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick.

Chelsea had made an impressive start and Costa headed over after getting in front of Craig Cathcart to meet Pedro’s right-wing cross.

However, they faded as Watford passed the ball around nicely and caused the hosts problems.

And a glorious chance to put the Hornets ahead fell to Odion Ighalo on 18 minutes after Chelsea had failed to fully clear a corner.

Jose Jurado’s scuffed shot fell to Ighalo, who was unmarked and onside but could only drag the ball wide of the target.

After going behind to Costa’s first goal for more than a month, and his fifth of the season, Watford continued to press and were eventually rewarded.
