Charlton boss rues missed chances after Brentford draw
Charlton boss Bob Peeters says his side will have to sharpen up in front of goal after being denied victory in their Championship opener at Brentford.
Igor Vetokele put the Addicks in front with a header from a corner just after the hour mark but Callum Harriot wasted an opportunity to double the lead when he hit the bar with an open goal gaping.
That miss was to prove crucial as Tommy Smith’s deflected late strike earned the newly-promoted Bees a point.
Peeters said: “You don’t normally get four big chances away from home, as we did.
“I think we deserved the goal, as Igor had already hit the post. Then Callum Harriot hits the bar from an open goal, when if he takes a second touch I think we clinch the game.
“It’s something we need to work on a little bit. But I can’t blame one player for his performance today.
“If you get a point away from home usually you are satisfied.
“We had seen a few games of theirs and we knew they would put pressure on in the first 25 minutes so it was important we stayed compact.
“In the second half we were playing to our own fans and we needed to show we can play football.”
