A look at Fulham’s potential return to the Premier League
Things are getting exciting for Fulham’s fans right now. At the time of writing, they’re quite a few points clear at the top of the Championship table and it’s looking like quite the task for anybody to catch up to them.
Things are looking good for the Lilywhites. But how will they get on when put up against the big guns in the Premier League should they manage to hold true and get there in the first place?
You might not even fancy Fulham to get promoted! Bournemouth, Luton and a couple of other teams are looking pretty strong, so with an extreme change in fortunes it just might not happen. If you fancy a bet on that, the odds will be pretty strong.
Check out some top bookmakers for odds now if you’re looking for a good place to put down that bet. For the time being, however, let’s find out how likely Fulham’s promotion actually is and how well they might do if they get into the Premier League.
The chances of a Fulham promotion to the Premier League
With just over six games left in the season at the time of writing, Fulham would have to make some serious errors to not win the Championship, let alone get promoted in the runners up spot or through the playoffs.
They’ve been in sparkling form recently, so we find the chances of this happening very slim. But it’s not impossible. Second-placed Bournemouth are hot on their heels (kind of) and there are some high-quality teams in the playoffs right now.
These include recently relegated Sheffield United and Luton Town – the team that just had a very good shot at knocking Chelsea out of the FA Cup. All-in-all however, it’s looking very likely that we’ll see Fulham in the Premier League next season, so let’s find out what that could look like.
Recent results against Premier League clubs
Fulham hasn’t been in the Premier League for quite some time; to give us an idea of how well they might do, we can look at their results against Premier League clubs of late.
A bit of a shock to the system recently was their game against Manchester City in the FA Cup. Here, they lost 4-1. But that was to be expected. City is arguably the best team in the world right now so the fact that Fulham managed to score against them in itself was pretty significant.
Back in September of 2021, Fulham had their only other game of the season against a Premier League club. This time it was Leeds United, and things were a lot closer. The game finished 0-0 in 90 minutes, and Fulham were unfortunately knocked out on penalties.
That should give Fulham a bit of hope. Leeds is not a bad team at all, so if they can get results against teams like that, there’s every chance they’ll win a few points when they go up a level.
Projections for the 2022/23 season
Based on Fulham’s form in the Championship and the information above, we feel that Fulham will get on reasonably well in the Premier League next season.
They’ve been scoring a lot of goals. That’s for sure. In fact, they’re by far the highest scorers in the league and look set to smash the 100-goal mark by the end of the season.
Their recent 7-0 thrashing of Reading and 6-2 against both Bristol City and Birmingham are prime examples of their ability to take control of a game completely – we hope to see more of that in the Premier League.
The only slight issue Fulham might have is in their ability in defence. We wouldn’t say that Fulham are shaky at the back, so to speak, but they have been known to concede cheap goals on occasion.
An example of this is their recent game against Barnsley, who are currently sitting in 22nd place in the relegation zone. Fulham gave away a cheap penalty earlier on which was converted. After this, they looked shaky and were lacking confidence, only just scraping by with an equalizer.
There’s a long transfer window ahead of them, though. If they manage to sign a strong defender or two, there’s no reason they can’t be in good shape for the league.
It will certainly be interesting to see Fulham back in their local rivalry with Chelsea. Naturally, Fulham are a long way off from really being able to give them a run for their money considering their position at third in the top flight.
However, things might just be closer than we expect if Fulham carry the momentum they currently have with them…
A few final thoughts on Fulham in the Premier League
We can’t wait for Fulham to get back in the top flight. It’s been many years, and we feel that they are rightfully going back up.
They might surprise us. Until then!
