QPR chase short-term keeper deal

QPR: Loftus Road

Freddie Woodman, David Marshall, Ben Hamer and Keiren Westwood are the goalkeepers currently on QPR’s radar as they seek a short-term option in the wake of Jordan Archer’s injury.

Back-up keeper Archer hurt his shoulder while making a decisive penalty save in Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Rotherham.

With first-choice stopper Seny Dieng at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, Archer’s injury leaves teenager Joe Walsh as Rangers’ only option unless a keeper is signed before this weekend’s match against promotion rivals West Brom.

Newcastle’s Woodman, 24, has made five appearances for the Magpies this season – four of them in the Premier League – and is potentially available.

The R’s would definitely sign vastly experienced Scotland international Marshall, 36, on a deal until the end of the season if an agreement can be reached to bring him in from Derby, where he is out of the first-team picture.

Hamer, 34, could be allowed to leave Swansea City and has been discussed as a potential option.

Former Sheffield Wednesday keeper Westwood, 37, is without a club and has been also discussed, but at this stage it looks unlikely that Rangers will turn to him.

West Brom’s David Button, who played under QPR boss Mark Warburton at Brentford, would have been in the frame for a move to W12 had first-choice Baggies keeper Sam Johnstone not recently received a three-match ban for violent conduct.

The suspension means Button has stepped in to deputise – and is set to play against Rangers on Saturday.
