Warburton frustrated after another QPR loss

Mark Warburton was frustrated after QPR fans returning to Loftus Road saw their team beaten by Reading.

Michael Olise’s last-minute goal condemned struggling Rangers to another defeat.

A crowd of 2,000 watched the game – the first time QPR fans have been able to attend a match since restrictions were imposed in March because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Manager Warburton said: “I thought the fans were tremendous. The biggest disappointment was not to give the fans three points.

“You heard the noise they generated. It’s great to have fans back in the stadium. I thought they were superb and I just wanted to give them three points.

“I hope very much they saw the effort and saw some good quality and what it means to the players.

“But ultimately they’re football fans and want to see their team win, and today they leave disappointed. That’s very frustrating for us.”

Warburton believes his side are better than their recent run of results suggests.

Rangers have dropped to 19th in the Championship table after winning just one of their past eight matches.

Warburton said: “If you lose a game of football and play horribly then it’s very clear where the problems lie and you can speak to players quite bluntly and clearly.

“But when you have that kind of result – and the Brentford and Bristol City games – it’s very frustrating.

“Sometimes you have these runs where it doesn’t quite go your way and I think at the moment it’s not going our way.

“In the first half I thought we looked a good team against a very good Reading team. We didn’t feel threatened.

“We’ve lacked a little bit of quality, maybe, on the final ball or final cross.

“It’s frustrating. I could sit here and bemoan the fine margins of the game, but the fact is it reads 1-0 Reading.”

Olise’s goal came after Ilias Chair had gone close to putting QPR ahead.

Chair latched onto Lyndon Dykes’ pass and curled a right-footed shot against the inside of the post.

Warburton said: “If Ilias’ shot had gone in there I think that would have been game over. I don’t think they would have bounced back from that.

“Their guy has then hit it from 28-29 yards into the bottom corner. It was a world class finish, but I don’t think my boys deserved that.

“The biggest disappointment is not to give the fans three points when we had them back in the stadium. I thought they were tremendous.”
