Aiden McGeady’s second-half strike denied QPR a first away win of the season.
Rangers went in front eight minutes before half-time, when Idrissa Sylla headed in from Luke Freeman’s corner.
Having gone ahead against the run of play, Rangers conceded an equaliser when they were well on top and the home fans were growing increasingly frustrated.
Pawel Wszolek, Massimo Luongo and Freeman had shots saved by Sunderland keeper Jason Steele, who also kept out headers from Jamie Mackie and Sylla.
McGeady curled home from near the edge of the penalty area just after the hour mark.
Sylla had a late chance to restore Rangers’ lead but his header was saved by Steele after being set up by substitute Conor Washington.
QPR: Smithies, Baptiste, Lynch, Bidwell, Wszolek (Osayi-Samuel 76), Scowen, Luongo, Freeman, Manning, Mackie (Washington 67), Sylla.
Subs not used: Lumley, Furlong, Smith, Ngbakoto, Wheeler.
