Sacked Chelsea youngster deserves a chance, says boss

QPR manager Mark Hughes believes Jacob Mellis has the ability to relaunch his career after being shown the door by Chelsea.

Midfielder Mellis, 21, was sacked by the Blues after admitting setting off a smoke grenade in a prank at the club’s Cobham training ground last month.

He has since joined QPR on trial ahead of a possible move to Loftus Road and Hughes has indicated that he is interested in signing him.

Speaking before it emerged that Mellis had been arrested following an alleged domestic incident, Hughes told West London Sport: “He’s got ability and I want to give the boy an opportunity.

“Obviously he left his previous club under a little bit of a cloud. We’re just having a look at him and we’ll see how things go. We want to give him a chance.”
