Harry Redknapp has turned his attention to Danny Simpson after failing to persuade QPR’s board to meet Wayne Bridge’s wage demands.
Bridge, 32, has joined Reading – a move that has angered Rangers boss Redknapp, who was keen to sign the former England left-back.
Redknapp is also looking to bring in a right-back and Newcastle’s Simpson is his first choice.
Simpson’s contract expires this summer and Newcastle have indicated that he will not be offered a new deal.
West Ham have also shown some interest in the 26-year-old, who began his career at Manchester United and has had loan spells at Royal Antwerp, Ipswich, Blackburn and Sunderland.
A number of other clubs have been alerted to Simpson’s availability and Redknapp wants Rangers chief executive Philip Beard to tie up a deal.
