QPR have placed Chris Ramsey in charge until the end of the season, potentially leaving the door open for Paul Clement to be appointed in the summer.
Clement, son of the late R’s legend Dave Clement, is currently assistant to Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, having also worked under the Italian at Chelsea and Paris St-Germain.
Rangers have held talks with the 42-year-old, who has indicated that he is interested in taking over at Loftus Road but intends see out the season at Real.
Ramsey, meanwhile, has impressed since being placed in caretaker charge following Harry Redknapp’s departure and has now been given the role of head coach.
He has quickly made a big impact among the players and guided Rangers to a 2-0 victory at Sunderland on Tuesday – their first away points of the campaign following 12 successive defeats on the road.
Ramsey was given an overseeing role at the club following the return of Les Ferdinand in October.
Former QPR and England star Ferdinand, initially installed as head of football operations and recently given the role of director of football, worked with Ramsey at Tottenham before both men left White Hart Lane last June after Tim Sherwood was sacked as manager.
Sherwood was lined up to replace Redknapp at QPR but many fans on Twitter urged chairman Tony Fernandes to instead appoint Clement.
Rangers expected to install Sherwood this week but failed to agree financial terms with the former Blackburn midfielder, who is now the bookmakers’ favourite to take over at Aston Villa following the sacking of Paul Lambert.
The Wandsworth-born Clement, a former PE teacher, has also coached at Fulham and Blackburn.
In 2000 he linked up his father’s former QPR team-mate Don Givens to coach the Republic of Ireland Under-21s.
Clement has had two spells at Chelsea, having worked there as a part-time youth coach before obtaining his Uefa ‘A’ coaching licence. He returned to Stamford Bridge in 2007.
He was an academy coach before being promoted during Guus Hiddink’s brief spell as Blues boss and Clement subsequently worked as first-team coach under Ancelotti.
