Harry Redknapp says he has been impressed by Yossi Benayoun since the Israeli’s arrival at QPR on trial.
Benayoun, without a club since leaving Chelsea when his contract ended during the summer, began training with Rangers last week.
And Redknapp believes the 33-year-old, who wants an 18-month deal and is keen to return to London, looks sharp despite his lack of match fitness.
“He’s just a smashing footballer,” Redknapp said.
“I tried to sign him when I was at Tottenham and have always enjoyed watching him play – he’s one of those players.
“He played at Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham so he can’t be a bad player, but he’s just training at the moment and we’ll see what happens.
“I’ve never discussed contracts or anything. I spoke to him, invited him in to train and he’s come in and joined in with the group.”
QPR’s development side play Reading on Tuesday, giving Redknapp a potential opportunity to see Benayoun in action.
But the R’s boss said: “I don’t need to see him play in a game. I’ve seen him play so many times and know what he can do.
“He’s never going to be unfit because he’s such a slim lad. Getting fit won’t be a problem for him. He hasn’t got to lose any weight.”
