QPR score 10 in opening friendly in Italy

Ben Gladwin scored twice, Seb Polter and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas netted too and their fellow summer signing Massimo Luongo also made his debut as QPR opened their pre-season campaign with a 10-0 win in Italy.

They were inevitably able to overwhelm Verona Stars – lowly opposition that stepped in when Rangers were forced into a late change of opponents and venue after Shakhtar Donetsk withdrew from a scheduled friendly on the eve of the game.

Jamie Mackie made his first appearance in a QPR shirt since returning to the club and there was a return too for outcast Samba Diakite, who scored the first two goals.

Clint Hill, Alejandro Faurlin, Reece Grego-Cox and Junior Hoilett also found the net for Rangers, whose first-half line-up included trialists Oscar Gobern and Christopher Schorch.

Charlie Austin and Leroy Fer, who returned to training slightly later than the rest of the squad, did not feature and will play in Rangers’ second friendly in Italy, against Monaco on Tuesday.

Diakite belted in the opening goal off the post and scored again a minute later after pouncing on a defensive mistake.

Polter slotted home the third shortly before half-time and Hill bundled in the fourth from a right-wing corner by Faurlin, who then made it 5-0 with a cool finish.

Grego-Cox fired in the sixth on 71 minutes and Gladwin netted after being set up by Emmanuel-Thomas, who strolled through the opposing defence to add the eighth before Hoilett scored a similar goal.

Gladwin made it 10 with a low shot into the bottom corner in the final minute.

First-half QPR team: Green; Kpekawa, Caulker, Onuoha, Schorch; Diakite, Luongo, Gobern, Phillips; Mackie; Polter.
Second-half team: McCarthy, Furlong, Caulker (Onuoha 68), Comley; Hoilett, Doughty, Faurlin, Gladwwin; Grego-Cox; Emmanuel-Thomas.
