Neil Warnock believes Heidar Helguson can continue playing a key role for QPR and has compared the striker to Bolton’s Kevin Davies.
Helguson, 34, has scored five top-flight goals this season – including a brilliant header in Rangers’ recent win at Stoke.
And R’s boss Warnock, who has long regarded Davies as one of the best forwards in the country, says he is not surprised by Helguson’s good form.
“I’ve seen Kevin Davies over the years and people have written him off and yet he performs, and Heidar’s a similar type of player,” he said.
“If that header against Stoke had been scored by most other players it would have been on the telly every five minutes. He made it look so easy, but it was a thumping header.”
Helguson was promised well before the end of last season that he would be offered a new deal at Loftus Road, which he later signed.
And Warnock feels the decision to keep the Icelander despite his previous injury problems has been vindicated.
“I always said to Heidar I’d be very surprised if he didn’t play at least 15 games for me this season,” Warnock revealed.
“If anything, because there are fewer games in the Premier League and you usually have one a week, it gives Heidar more opportunity to recover.
“In that sense getting promoted has actually helped him. That’s why I made sure I retained him.”
