Alex McCarthy is in talks with Crystal Palace after they triggered a £3.5m release clause in the goalkeeper’s QPR contract.
West London Sport revealed that Rangers had rejected £3m bid from Palace for McCarthy, 25, but that the Eagles were expected to return with another offer.
They have subsequently done so, leaving Rangers facing the prospect of losing a player they signed from Reading only a year ago.
He has made only four first-team appearances since that move and Palace boss Alan Pardew is keen to take him to Selhurst Park.
McCarthy is regarded as an excellent prospect but he has so far been unable to dislodge Rob Green as QPR’s first-choice keeper.
Green, 35, has a year remaining on his contract at Loftus Road and speculation that he could targeted by a number of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, came to nothing.
Rangers have been aware of Palace’s interest in McCarthy for some time and identified several keepers as potential signings should he leave.
They included England Under-21 international Jonathan Bond before he was recently signed by Reading from Watford.
QPR head coach Chris Ramsey told West London Sport earlier this week that he was unsure whether the club would be able to hang on to McCarthy in light of Palace’s interest.
