QPR fans will take to Phillips, says Waddock

Gary Waddock has tipped Matt Phillips to have a major impact at QPR.

The 22-year-old Scotland international, signed from Blackpool on Friday, played under former Rangers man Waddock at Wycombe.

He follows in the footsteps of Trevor Sinclair, who also left Blackpool to join the R’s, and Waddock believes Phillips has the potential to emulate the popular wingers who have graced Loftus Road.

Waddock told West London Sport: “Rangers have had some really good wide-men and once Matt’s had time to settle – he has an injury at the moment – I think he’ll become another favourite there.

“I think the fans will take to him. He likes to take players on and will excite the crowd.

“He loves to beat a man and the fans love to see that. He’s quick, strong and a really talented player.

“I had him a few years ago when he was very young and it was obvious then he had real potential.

“He can be exciting to watch and I think he showed that when he went to Blackpool.”

Phillips, who is set to return to full training in the next few weeks following a recent arm operation, will wear Rangers’ number seven shirt.

Born in Aylesbury, he represented England at Under-19 and Under-20 levels but qualifies to play for Scotland and was handed his first cap last year.

As a teenager at Wycombe he attracted the interest of a host of clubs before another former Rangers manager, Ian Holloway, signed him for Blackpool in 2010.

“Matt’s a great kid as well – a really good person as well as a talented player,” Waddock added.

“It’s a good investment by QPR, no question. He’ll be an asset.”
