QPR fans are being urged to help turn the club’s women’s team from third-tier strugglers into one of the country’s top sides.
A three-year plan has been drawn up to transform the fortunes of QPR Women FC, currently joint bottom of the Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.
With clubs outside the top two divisions having missed out on a major cash injection into the women’s game by the Football Association, Rangers are appealing for financial help.
Kevin McGrath, a QPR director prior to the Gianni Paladini-led boardroom coup of 2005 and now QPR Women FC chair, is attempting to raise £25,000.
“Our objective is to become one of the top women’s teams in the country,” said manager Martino Chevannes.
“The big cash injection from the FA goes to the top two tiers and leaves next to nothing for tiers three to seven.
“Clubs playing in the top leagues can pay their players full or part-time wages whilst those in our league have to pay money for the basic pitch hire, travel and kit.
“I can assure you every penny raised will be carefully spent and contribute to our success.”
With Chevannes’ team facing a battle to stay in their current division, the first year of the three-year plan involves avoiding relegation as well as attracting sponsors.
Goals for year two include a mid-table finish and making new signings, with a cup final appearance and beginning an application to join the Women’s Super League among the aims for year three.
McGrath said QPR have “been as generous as possible with its very limited funds” in supporting the club’s women’s team.
“Even so, we need an injection of cash to move on from the position of just hanging on in our league to one challenging for promotion,” he added.
“We need around £25,000 on top of QPR’s generous contribution to make this happen.
“This will enable Martino and his team to sign good players, provide excellent training and pay for travel, pitch hire and all the things that will enable our team to flourish.”
