QPR confirm Nelsen’s departure for Toronto

QPR have confirmed that key defender Ryan Nelsen is set to leave the club, but say a date for his departure has not yet been agreed and he will available for Saturday’s game against Tottenham.

Boss Harry Redknapp suggested at the weekend that the New Zealander, 35, was keen to take a manager’s job in America.

And Nelsen has been offered the chance to take over at Canada’s Major League Soccer outfit Toronto, who have appointed him as successor to former Ipswich star Paul Mariner.

Nelsen, who previously played for DC United, planned to return to the MLS last summer but was persuaded to sign a 12-month contract by the then R’s boss Mark Hughes, who also managed him at Blackburn.

The intention was always for Nelsen to be at Loftus Road for only one season, but the Toronto offer prompted him to seek an early exit.
