QPR coach explains Austin substitution

QPR first-team coach Joe Jordan revealed that Charlie Austin was substituted in the 1-0 win at Bolton to avoid the risk of him being sent off.

The striker was replaced by Bobby Zamora midway through the second half after he was booked following an altercation with Bolton defender Marc Tierney.

Austin’s was one of five bookings picked up by Rangers as they battled to victory at the Reebok Stadium, where Andy Johnson scored their winner.

“We had to be cautious. He was getting wrapped up there in an incident he really shouldn’t be getting involved in,” said Jordan.

“I never saw a bad tackle in the game. To collect five bookings in a game like that and they collected one – I would question the bookings.

“I think when he’s booked Richard Dunne, who I thought got the ball in the ninth minute; once you start booking people as early as that for that sort of offence then you’re setting your stall out.

“For us to get five bookings is definitely over the score.”

Johnson’s goal was one of few chances Rangers created in a tight game.

And Jordan was full of praise for the way the team secured three points.

“I’m pleased with the result and I’m pleased with the performance as well,” he said.

“Bolton’s not an easy place to come to. I think we can get better, with respect to the way we have started the campaign we have approached it in the right manner.”
