QPR beaten in injury-time at Ipswich

QPR suffered an injury-time defeat at Portman Road having been 15 minutes away from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s first win as manager.

Junior Hoilett’s second goal in as many games, coming in first-half injury-time, put Rangers ahead as he converted Leroy Fer’s cross.

The Dutchman was denied the chance to make it 2-0 by a fine recovery save from Ipswich keeper Dean Gerken – and that proved the turning point.

Former Brentford midfielder Jonathan Douglas equalised with an overhead kick on 77 minutes and in the second minute of stoppage time, Luke Chambers powered home a header to win it.

Just as in the 1-1 draw at Bristol City last weekend, a QPR side missing the injured Charlie Austin couldn’t hang on to a lead given to them by Hoilett.

Moments after Chambers had headed wide when well placed at the other end, the Rangers winger met Fer’s fine delivery with his head, in a moment of quality completely out of keeping with the rest of a dire first half.

After the break, Ipswich went close as Pitman, from a tight angle, fashioned a shot which cannoned back off the post.

Fer was unlucky not to double QPR’s lead when he took the ball away from Gerken but he had to delay the shot, giving the keeper time to save it.

Ipswich were galvanised by that escape and their pressure told when Rangers failed to deal with a cross into the box and Douglas hooked the ball back over his shoulder and beyond Rob Green.

Nedum Onuoha saw a late header tipped behind by Gerken – a vital save given Chambers’ intervention a few minutes later, as he stormed into the box to nod in Freddie Sears’ cross.
