Ryan Nelsen could stay at QPR until March.
Rangers feared the defender, 35, would leave them this month to become manager of Toronto FC.
Nelsen has agreed to take over at the MLS club and has been discussing the date of his release from a one-year contract at Loftus Road.
At one stage it seemed Saturday’s match against Tottenham would be his final appearance for the R’s, but it now seems he may delay his departure for at least a month.
Rangers boss Harry Redknapp said: “Hopefully we will keep him for another month or six to seven weeks.
“He’s come here and has been fantastic. You can see why someone wants to want to take him to Toronto.”
Meanwhile, QPR are expected to confirm the loan signing of Tottenham midfielder Jake Livermore.
