Les in charge after Redknapp quits QPR
Harry Redknapp has left QPR after tendering his resignation.
West London Sport recently revealed that Redknapp was at odds with Les Ferdinand – a stand-off that was likely to soon end the 67-year-old’s reign as manager at Loftus Road.
Former Rangers and England striker Ferdinand, who in October returned to the club as head of football operations, has been placed in temporary charge along with Chris Ramsey.
Ramsey was given an overseeing role at Rangers shortly after the appointment of Ferdinand. The pair were together at Tottenham, where they worked under Redknapp when he was Spurs boss, and later under Tim Sherwood.
Sherwood, who left Tottenham last summer, has long been in the frame to replace Redknapp at QPR.
Redknapp had knee surgery in summer of 2013 and has since shelved a knee replacement operation he says he will now undergo.
“I have had such a fantastic time at QPR,” said Redknapp, who replaced Mark Hughes as R’s boss in December 2013.
“I would like to thank the board, the players and all my staff, and especially the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me since I arrived at the club for their tremendous support.
“Sadly I need immediate surgery on my knee which is going to stop me from doing my job in the coming weeks.
“It means I won’t be able to be out on the training pitch every day, and if I can’t give 100%. I feel it’s better for someone else to take over the reins.
“My relationship with Tony Fernandes has been one of the highlights of my footballing career and I wish the club every success. I am confident they will survive in the Premier League this year.”
Redknapp was unable to keep Rangers in the Premier League after succeeding Hughes but they were promoted back to the top flight via last season’s play-offs.
However, they have struggled this season – losing all of their away league matches – and flagship Redknapp signings such as Rio Ferdinand and Sandro have not worked out, while Jordon Mutch was sold to Crystal Palace after failing to impress during a short spell in west London.
Redknapp’s resignation comes the day after QPR failed to make a signing on transfer deadline day.
Rangers chairman Fernandes said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Harry for everything he has done for QPR during his time in charge.
“We part on good terms and I would personally like to wish him all the best for the future.”
