Key defender Nelsen looks set to quit QPR
QPR defender Ryan Nelsen looks likely to leave Loftus Road to manage a club in America, according to R’s boss Harry Redknapp.
Nelsen, 35, has been linked with a coaching role at his former club DC United, although they have reportedly denied he is rejoining them.
Toronto have also been linked with the New Zealand captain, who delayed a planned return to the United States when Redknapp’s predecessor Mark Hughes persuaded him to join the R’s on a one-year contract.
The intention was always for Nelsen to stay for only one season, but Redknapp has indicated that the player is looking to leave earlier – possibly as soon as this month.
Redknapp said: “Ryan Nelsen is very important to us, a fantastic leader and a top player. But he’s been offered a job in America and I think there’s every chance he’ll want to go.
“It’ll be soon. He wants to manage a club and I think it’s a chance for him to go and manage.
“He’s been fantastic. He’s one of the best pros I’ve met in my life. He’s a fantastic player, a great trainer – he’s a massive part of the team and to lose him would be a massive blow for us.”
Redknapp plans talks with QPR’s owners to discuss the situation and insisted that although he will not stand in Nelsen’s way, he is trying to convince him not to leave.
“We are trying, but it’s difficult,” Redknapp admitted.

Hi QPR fans,
I am a Toronto FC supporter and rumours out here say Ryan Nelsen is coming to MLS to be Toronto FC’s assistant coach to Englishman Paul Mariner who coaches Toronto FC.
Kevin Payne who is Toronto’s president has a relationship with Nelsen dating back to his days at DC United.
