QPR striker Smith out ‘for a few weeks’

Matt Smith faces “a few weeks” on the sidelines, according to Steve McClaren, but an ankle injury the striker suffered in training is not as serious as QPR initially feared.

Smith, whose contract expires at the end of the season, sustained the injury on Thursday, ruling him out of the game against Stoke.

And Rangers believed he could be facing a long spell out before their worries were allayed.

Manager McClaren explained: “When he went down injured we thought it was going to be a long-term one.

“I was so, so disappointed. But fortunately he should be back in a few weeks.”

Meanwhile, Geoff Cameron, out since December with an ankle injury, is expected to be in the squad for Wednesday’s game against Rotherham.

Angel Rangel is close to also returning but is unlikely to be available until after the approaching international break.
