Holloway backs Luongo but admits formation has not worked

Ian Holloway says he is keen to play with two strikers after a failed attempt to play with three up front.

The QPR boss, whose side have lost six matches in a row and dropped to 21st in the Championship table, has opted for one forward through the middle in recent matches.

He wanted to play with three attackers, with Yeni Ngbakato and Pawel Wszolek in wide positions, but admits it did not work out as he had planned.

“It’s all coming, but you need to win games,” Holloway said.

“We’re going to need to try to get two up front. When there’s two up there you can work off each other.

“My way of doing it is with three but we don’t look like three at the minute with that group. It looks like (only) one too much.”

Meanwhile, Holloway has given his backing to Massimo Luongo, who gave away a penalty in the recent 3-0 loss at Brighton and has suffered a dip in form since an impressive spell earlier in the season.

Holloway said: “I thought against Brighton that Massimo was as good on the ball as anyone in their team as well as ours. He’s a wonderful little footballer.”

Rangers have a number of injury worries ahead of the New Year’s Eve game at Wolves, with Luongo among the players struggling.
