QPR need to change – Hasselbaink

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has warned his QPR players they must be stronger mentally to avoid throwing points away late on in matches.

Rangers were leading 1-0 at Ipswich on Boxing Day with 15 minutes to play and heading for their first win under Hasselbaink, only to concede an equaliser before losing to Luke Chambers’ injury-time header.

They also allowed Bristol City a late leveller in the 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate last Saturday.

After the game at Portman Road, Hasselbaink said: “We need to change a few things.

“We need to change our belief, we need to change our mentality, especially in the last 20 minutes.

“We need to change the structure, the way of thinking and the way of approaching things.

“I’m still learning about individuals. For three-quarters of the game [at Ipswich], I was really happy with them. We now need to go to 100 per cent, that is our aim.”

Hasselbaink said he was particularly disappointed with the way Rangers failed to pick up Chambers’ run for Ipswich’s winning goal, with the last quarter of the game undoing their previous hard work.

He added: “We were in control. The first half was very good.

“But in the last 20 minutes, your concentration levels have to go up – and they didn’t.

“I’m most disappointed with the second goal. The first goal was a little bit of a fluke but you have to stop the cross. But the second goal was poor. I did not really feel that it was coming.

“At that moment, we were going forward as well. We had a few opportunities but we didn’t work the goalkeeper.”
