Zamora in line for Rangers recall

QPR will assess Bobby Zamora’s fitness on Thursday but are confident the striker will be fit enough to start this weekend’s game against Manchester City.

Zamora was outstanding in Rangers’ recent win against Aston Villa but continues to be troubled by an ongoing hip condition.

He was a substitute for Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea, although that was partly because boss Harry Redknapp did not want to start with two up front against the Premier League leaders.

“Bobby could hardly walk for a couple of days after the Villa game. It was impossible to start with him at Chelsea,” Redknapp explained.

“And to be honest, you can’t go there and play 4-4-2 unless you want to get smashed to pieces. It just can’t happen.”

Redknapp recently changed his approach for managing Zamora’s fitness following a discussion with the 33-year-old.

Zamora was regarded as an impact player to bring off the bench but Rangers now prefer to start with him, particularly for home matches.

Meanwhile, the R’s are also hoping to have midfielders Joey Barton and Jordon Mutch and defender Nedum Onuoha available for the City game.

All three players have been struggling with hamstring problems.
