Southampton have entered the battle to sign Cardiff’s England defender Steven Caulker.
The 22-year-old was already considering offers from QPR and Crystal Palace, who have both met an £8m release clause in his contract.
West London Sport recently revealed that Rangers had made an offer for Caulker and subsequently that they were in talks with him – and that they remain hopeful of bringing him to Loftus Road despite reports he has chosen a move to Palace.
But they also face competition from Southampton, who have long been linked with Caulker and have now made an approach.
It comes as the Saints look likely to sell Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren, who is wanted by Liverpool.
Caulker has not been included in the Cardiff squad for a pre-season trip to Austria.
Meanwhile, Rangers are set to announce the signing of Rio Ferdinand on a one-year deal.
