McClaren confident the goals will come for QPR

Steve McClaren believes QPR will improve their goalscoring record and climb the table.

A 1-1 draw at home to Derby meant Rangers went into the international break 18th in the Championship and having scored just nine league goals – no team in the division has scored fewer.

But manager McClaren is convinced that will change.

“We’ve tightened up at the back and been hard to beat. We do need to start scoring,” he said.

“We’ve got goals in the team. Once we start scoring we’ll probably turn performances like this into wins.”

Rangers have improved since a dismal start to the season in which they lost all their opening four league games under McClaren – a run which included a 7-1 hammering at West Brom.

The arrival on loan of forwards Tomer Hemed and Nahki Wells has made a huge difference, although Hemed’s winner against Wigan is the only goal they have scored between them so far.

Wells was again excellent without scoring as Rangers battled back from a goal down at Loftus Road, where Geoff Cameron netted a second-half equaliser.

It was Cameron’s first goal since his arrival on loan from Stoke and only the American’s third goal in English football.

“They’re good players and they’ve made a hell of a difference,” McClaren said.

“After the first four games we were pointless and were conceding goals.

“Wells, Hemed and Geoff Cameron have come in and made a big difference to our team, which we knew they would do.

“The team looks better and in the last eight games we’ve got 14 points.

“At the present moment we’re not looking up (the table), but once we start scoring goals maybe we can.”
