QPR defender Richard Dunne has been included in the Republic of Ireland’s provisional squad for their friendly against Serbia next month.
The veteran centre-back was sidelined for the whole of last season and was unavailable for Republic boss Martin O’Neill’s first two matches in charge because of concerns over his fitness.
O’Neill has watched him in action for Rangers recently and has decided to name Dunne, 34, in his 29-man squad ahead of the game in Dublin on 5 March.
Striker Kevin Doyle, on loan at QPR from Wolves, has also been included.
Dunne has previously suggested that his involvement against Serbia could depend on his fitness – and how QPR are faring in their battle for promotion.
In December he said: “The thought was that I would miss November but would come back for the Serbia game in March and by that stage of the season we’ll know where we are at QPR.
“I want to play every game, but I’m getting to an age where I can’t. It’s important to be playing every week at QPR and that’s what I’ve got to make sure I’m fit for.”
