QPR should not think about promotion – Hasselbaink

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink insisted QPR should not even think about winning promotion after their 2-1 defeat at home to Hull City.

Adama Diomande’s injury-time winner for the visitors left Rangers 15th in the Championship table and still without a win since Hasselbaink took over as manager at Loftus Road.

The Dutchman was appointed following the sacking of Chris Ramsey, who lost his job because the club’s owners expected a promotion challenge.

But Hasselbaink, who has been in charge for six matches, said: “I’m not even thinking of that. We shouldn’t even be thinking about promotion.

“We should just be thinking about improving the team. Everybody is thinking about the outcome, but we need to get other things right first.

A late defensive error condemned Rangers to another defeat

“Of course it’s frustrating, but believe it or not that (getting the first win) is not the focus.

“If you are going to focus on win, win, win, you are not going to get the game right, and you have to get the game right to win. I think today we got it right.

“It is a process. We need to get it right and when we do the wins will come. Don’t get me wrong, I want to win, but you don’t win if you don’t get other things right.”

Rangers seemed to have rescued a point when Sebastian Polter headed in an 86th-minute equaliser to cancel out Abel Hernandez’s opener.

But when defender Grant Hall and keeper Rob Green collided as they attempted to clear Sam Lucas’ cross, the ball struck substitute Diomande and rebounded into the net.

“It looked like we were going to get the three points after we scored. There was only one team in it at that moment,” Hasselbaink said.

“The boys were pushing and believed they could get those three points, but certain things happen. There was a big misunderstanding and we got punished.

“I think we were unfortunate to lose that game. It was not a game where they hammered us or we hammered them. It was actually a draw in a way.”
