QPR bring in Cameron as Washington leaves

Conor Washington has left QPR, who have confirmed the signing of Geoff Cameron on a season-long loan from Stoke City.

West London Sport revealed this week that Rangers were looking to bring in Cameron, largely because he can play in midfield as well as defence, having previously also first revealed their moves for Nahki Wells, Tomer Hemed and Angel Rangel.

Confirming his arrival, Rangers manager Steve McClaren told the club website: “We were keen to bolster our squad so I am delighted to bring in a player who can play in any one of three positions – right back, centre back or central midfield.

“But it’s not just about his versatility – Geoff has fantastic experience and has spent the last few years playing regularly in the Premier League.”

Washington, meanwhile, has signed for Sheffield United on a one-year deal after being released by QPR.

West London Sport revealed on Friday morning that Washington was set to have his contract terminated by mutual consent and join the Blades.

Washington, 26, struggled following his move to Loftus Road from Peterborough in 2016. His contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

He slipped further down the pecking order of strikers following Rangers’ recent loan signings of Hemed and Wells.

The Northern Ireland international made 92 league appearances for QPR, with 34 of those coming as a substitute, and scored 13 goals.

  • Cameron, really, sounds like deja-vu and a Mark Hughes type signing, i.e. a has been; would rather stick with kids even if it means going down than buy old men after one last pay day
