QPR want Stoke’s Cameron on loan

QPR want to sign Geoff Cameron on loan from Stoke City.

Rangers are looking to bring in another option at centre-back and in midfield before the loan window closes on Friday.

A number of possible signings are being looked into, but Cameron, 33, is the main target because he can play in both positions.

The United States international has made 186 appearances for Stoke, who signed him from Houston Dynamo six years ago. He has not played so far this season.

Rangers are keen to sign a utility player because their options are restricted by Financial Fair Play rules and the club face a transfer embargo in January.

A player who could operate in both defence in midfield is therefore seen as a wise choice at this stage.

However, if they fail to land Cameron, QPR would then have to consider different options for centre-back and central midfield.

Rangers’ ex-Derby manager Steve McClaren would like to bring in George Thorne or Tom Huddlestone from his former club.

But there are doubts over midfielder Thorne’s fitness and although former England international Huddlestone can play at the back as well in midfield, and is potentially available, his wages appear to be a stumbling block.

Tommy Elphick has long been on QPR’s radar – enquiries have been made about the Aston Villa centre-back during previous transfer windows – and he is being lined up as a possible signing should Cameron prove to be out of reach.

So too is Toulouse’s France Under-21 midfielder Alexis Blin.
