Brentford reached the third round of the EFL Cup in fine style, thrashing QPR 4-1 at Loftus Road. Here’s how we rated each player in Tuesday’s west London derby.

QPR

Matt Ingram: 7

No blame could be attached to the keeper for any of Brentford’s goals. In fact, but for his saves from Josh Clarke and Neal Maupay, the visitors would have been out of sight before half-time.

Darnell Furlong: 6

The youngster notched his first QPR goal with a well-taken header – and might even have scored another from close range. On the debit side, his poor marking contributed to Brentford’s second and third goals.

Steven Caulker: 5

As has been well documented, Caulker hasn’t played much football of late – and it showed. He was slow to react when Florian Jozefzoon broke to set up Brentford’s first goal and he generally struggled.

Alex Baptiste: 6

Like Caulker, Baptiste looked short of match sharpness, and was booked for hauling down Clarke early on, although he improved as the game went on.

Jack Robinson: 6

It’s always a similar story with Robinson – he contributes when going forward but looks suspect when required to defend and his positioning could have been much better.

Pawel Wsolek: 7

The Polish winger was one of the few Rangers men who looked likely to create something with his vision and crossing ability, before making way for Jamie Mackie in the final quarter of the game.

Ilias Chair: 6

The teenager showed glimpses of his ability with some nice touches even though most of the game passed him by. Has potential.

Ariel Borysiuk: 5

With Maupay breathing down his neck, there was little Borysiuk could do to avoid putting the ball into his own net in the ninth minute – but his distribution was generally poor throughout.

Ryan Manning: 6

The midfielder found it hard to make much impression as Brentford dominated, but he did test keeper Luke Daniels with a skidding shot that should have led to a penalty when Idrissa Sylla appeared to be tripped in the aftermath.

Yeni Ngbakoto: 6

Although he looked lively and supplied the cross for Furlong to reduce the deficit, Ngbakoto missed two opportunities himself – both headers that flew off target when Rangers were two goals down.

Idrissa Sylla: 6

The striker threatened in patches and was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when he chased the rebound from Manning’s effort just before half-time, but he faded in the second period.

Luke Freeman: 7

Sent on to replace Manning early in the second half, Freeman belatedly gave Rangers some creative presence – and, of course, bundles of the enthusiasm they had also lacked.

Jamie Mackie: 6

Like Freeman, Mackie – who came on for Wsolek with 20 minutes remaining – was introduced as much for his attitude as his footballing qualities. But he had little opportunity to make a difference.

Matt Smith: 6

The big centre-forward represented Rangers’ final throw of the dice when he replaced Caulker for the last quarter of an hour and might have done better with the one chance that fell his way.

Brentford

Luke Daniels: 6

A competent display from Brentford’s back-up keeper, although he was fortunate not to concede a penalty just before half-time.

Maxime Colin: 6

Back in his natural position at right-back after covering at left-back in the league. Defended well and helped Brentford build as they exploited space down the right.

John Egan: 6

Back in the starting line-up and as captain. Continued his knack of getting on the scoresheet with his second goal in three games this season.

Andreas Bjelland: 6

The Dane had the assist for Brentford’s second goal. A slip early in the second half allowed Ngbakoto to race clear, but his subsequent pass was intercepted and the danger passed.

Ilias Chatzitheodoridis: 6

The left-back, stepping up from the B team, looked good breaking down the wing. Was left exposed a couple of times by poor positioning, when his inexperience showed.

Florian Jozefzoon: 7

Played a major part in the opening goal when he burst down the right and saw his cross turned into his own goal by Borysiuk, but was hesitant in front of goal despite getting into a number of good positions.

Romaine Sawyers: 7

Displayed his usual box of tricks as he was involved throughout in Brentford’s best moments. A sublime touch to release Maupay for Brentford’s third goal.

Kamehelo Mokotjo: 6

Fresh from his call-up to the South Africa squad for their World Cup qualifiers, Mokotjo marshalled the midfield and did the basics well.

Nico Yennaris: 6

A quiet game in the middle, by his standards, but he covered a number of QPR’s quick breaks from corners well.

Josh Clarke: 8

Heavily involved for the Bees, making an early break down the right before picking out Jozefzoon who crossed for the first goal. Clarke then wrapped things up with a composed low finish across Ingram into the bottom corner.

Neal Maupay: 7

The Frenchman led the line well and was a nuisance all night before being substituted. Scored the third goal with a high-quality finish when he fired a rocket past Ingram from just inside the box.

Ryan Woods: 6

Received a rapturous reception from the Brentford fans on his return from compassionate leave. Did a solid job in midfield when he came on for the final 20 minutes.

Justin Shaibu: 6

Displayed a more physical side to his game than seen in his cameos last season. And he produced a perfectly-timed pass to set up Clarke for Brentford’s fourth goal.
