Harry Redknapp says he intends to keep Oguchi Onyewu at QPR despite Nedum Onuoha’s return to action.
Onyewu, 31, was recently given short-term contract with a view to extending the deal until the end of the season.
But Redknapp stalled over signing the United States centre-back, believing Onuoha’s recovery from a hamstring problem might enable him to delay bringing in a defender until the transfer window reopens.
Onuoha featured in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Reading, while Richard Dunne is expected to overcome niggling injury problems during the two-week international break.
However, Redknapp insists he is still minded to retain Onyewu as cover.
“He’s a good lad and there are so many games coming you never know where an injury’s coming from,” said the R’s boss.
“We lost Tom Carroll and Ale Faurlin – that’s how it can go. When I was at Portsmouth we had four centre-halves and suddenly, in just over two weeks, I lost all four of them.
“We went to Wolves and had to play two full-backs at centre-half because we had no centre-halves and that can happen.
“You need cover. Pick up one or two injuries quickly and you’ve got to juggle around a bit.”
