McClaren not expecting many signings at QPR

Steve McClaren says he does not expect much transfer activity at QPR this summer.

McClaren, recently installed as Rangers manager, insists he wants “quality not quantity” and that he is happy with the core of the squad he inherited from Ian Holloway.

“We have to have a look at what’s needed, but I’m pleased with what we’ve got. I think the core – the nucleus – of the squad is very good,” McClaren said.

“We need to add quality not quantity. There won’t be a lot.”

Rangers, hampered by Financial Fair Play and the fall-out from the club’s previous spending, will continue to cut costs.

McClaren has praised Holloway, who was sacked as R’s boss last month, and technical director Chris Ramsey for the work done at Loftus Road during a challenging couple of seasons.

The former England manager said: “The work that has been done in the last two years by the board and Ian Holloway has been a fantastic job.

“It takes a certain kind of manager to manage in the two-year period the club’s just been through and he’s done it ever so well. He’s left very good players here.”

Rangers might not be able to spend significantly unless they are able to sell players in the coming weeks.

Better position

However, McClaren has suggested the club will have more room to manoeuvre than in previous transfer windows.

“I think that’s all for discussion,” he said. “This club now is in a far better position to move forward than it was a year ago and especially two years ago. Credit to everybody who was in that position.

“We need to be very careful still. I still don’t think we’re out of the woods. I still think we have to cut our cloth.

“But what’s been shown in the last two years is the appeal of Queens Park Rangers, especially to youngsters because of the way they’ve been brought through.

“Chris Ramsey has been working in that respect. There are some good young players coming through and I’m excited to work with them.”
