Fears over Nelsen ahead of vital Saints clash
QPR have been warned Ryan Nelsen will play for New Zealand next week despite concerns over the veteran defender’s fitness.
New Zealand Football have indicated that it will not change its country-before-club policy after protests from the likes of West Ham boss Sam Allardyce.
It means Nelsen, who has been nursing an ankle knock, is set to feature in a friendly against China three days before his club’s crucial home clash with fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton.
His expected involvement in Shanghai is a worry for Rangers, especially as they will be without the suspended Stephane Mbia.
Nelsen, 35, will be making his 50th appearance for his country.
Allardyce was unhappy that Winston Reid was called up for recent World Cup qualifiers despite the Hammers defender having a back problem.
And Rangers manager Mark Hughes has previously admitted concerns over Nelsen’s fitness following the player’s involvement with the All Whites.
